Getting started

It's easy to start wikiing. Just search on something or someone and edit or add the page (directions included) using the edit tab. For further instructions see the User's Guide sections for readers and editors.

Still need more help getting started?

Start from the beginning

Postscript

Why did I start this anyway? Well, I'm not really sure. I tried to blog (you can see samples of that at my site), but discovered that I wasn't very good at it, and it was lacking something. I decided that what it was lacking was the ability for others to provide live input on the blog. It would have been easy enough for me to create some sort of feedback loop in the blog, but then what would I write about. I figured that a wiki was a better solution as people can wiki what they want. They can create their own topic (like this one) and just rant on their own. Maybe someone will add to or remove from their rant.

After I started this, I realized that I might be onto something. Wikiing is such a cool idea. Look at Wikipedia or other popular wikis. I think wikis are the next blog. Don't get me wrong, it's one thing to have a blog edited by someone who really knows what they are talking about, and it's another for some random person on the internet to blog. Why not wiki instead? Wikis are taking off and there is ample evidence of that out there on the web besides just Wikipedia (e.g. Wikibooks,Wikispecies,Wiktionary,Wikiversity, etc.), and now a wiki work has actually made it to print (at least I had heard there was a book on economics written by the collective (a wiki)).

Even later after I figured I was onto something, I started thinking about wikis as a potential business proposition. I have several ideas I'm kicking around on how to turn a wiki into something that generates revenue. I'm still going through the weeds, but while I'm doing so, I wanted to get started and start learning how to run a wiki (build, run, manage, customize, support, and develop extensions, etc.).

When I started BoswellWiki, the goal was sort of a fun project for friends and family. I was thinking I would start with myself and see what I could come up with for those in my family tree. What they do, their parents, siblings, etc. Then if others contributed, it would grow and we would get more information on our common geneology. I even envisioned writing some code which would crawl the wiki and pull out relationships to build a live family tree. Some of this is being done at some other wikis, but I figured I have some fun with it while it lasted.

As I continued to dive into the wiki world, I realized there is no shortage of wikis (I found Star Trek Wikis, The Wookieepedia (Star Wars wikis), Random wikis, just to name a few). Yet there are still a ton of improvements that can be made to the front end (presentation), back end, ease of getting data into the wiki, and the list goes on. However, it all starts with data. At this point, I am lacking the amount of data needed to move forward with development. That is why I would like everyone to give wikiing a try. Create a page; ANY page will do. Put whatever comes to mind. I created pages for my pets, my hobbies, my politics and other random stuff. So please contribute something. I'll even do my best to assist with that and give pointers along the way.

As I (still) continue diving into wikis, I think it will just be fun to see what it turns into (so if you feel like it add something ANYTHING, please do). Create one or two pages and see if they get any traffic (or even edited). At this point, it's still a hobby; but I would like to take it somewhere and will try to maintain any of the information that is put in he BoswellWiki. At a minimum, I'll let those who contribute know what is going on with the site and could even upload the contents to another wiki if this one just isn't going to make it.

My goals are constantly shifting, however, I still want this to be something even someone who isn't wiki-literate can do. To enable this I'm adding features as fast as I can create them. Future ideas for the BoswellWiki include:

  • WYSIWYG Editor (currently in beta...see below)
  • Blog - a blog and a wiki combined would be cool
  • Tasks
  • Calendar
  • a few bots (for various purposes)

All of this is running on an old Pentium desktop running Ubuntu Linux (no longer running on my iMac). I'll create a page for it soon, but until then you can check the details of my iMac here.

Latest News

I will try to keep the latest news here. You can always check out News for all the latest information.

  • Added embedded YouTube video capability. See News for more information.
  • I am testing out a new WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor for those that are not wikiliterate. You can use it here.
    • This search includes the SidBoswell.com site, all the pages from the BoswellWiki, the Apache documentation for this version of Apache, as well as the O'Reilly unix and perl bookshelf.

NOTE: Some jerk was hacking the site, so I have had to implement some security. Please let me know if you can not edit, move, or otherwise do something you think you should be able to. I'm continuing to look for a more elegant solution, but until then, I will not be able to just give anyone who confirms their e-mail address free reign (as there are plenty of ways to face e-mail confirmation and then wreak havoc). Once I figure out how to prevent Mr. Buckets from screwing with me, I'll open up the wiki for more access. Until then, most of you have been granted edit privileges (but I've had to restrict the move privilege). Let me know if you feel the need for it (just e-mail me at my personal e-mail account, @boswellwiki, one of the plethora of chat options at Sid Boswell, or hit me on my talk pages). Sorry for the inconvenience....
